Missing Matchset Mystery [Closed]

WHO: Detective Llewellyn & Enis Edrin.
WHEN: July 14th.
WHERE: Llewellyn's detective agency & the Merchant Dome.
WHAT: The pair team up as an unlikely duo and solve a mystery.
WARNINGS: Crime, will update as needed.

Enis didn't really know what to expect when she showed up at Llewellyn's office but it wasn't this. Mostly because it was kind of small and a bit like a hole in the wall. That was a little bit of an exaggeration but still, it surprised her.

It was her understanding that he worked alone, so when she walked up to the door she knocked and then opened it to step inside. It was an open office for his clients. So it was probably okay.

"Detective? You in?" She'd told him that she was going to be stopping by.

The office was small, but furnished. A small seating area with an old sofa along one wall great for the odd person who was waiting for someone else (or the odd nap), a low coffee table in front of it. Along one wall he had crammed in several book shelves and an old cabinet for storage, while the other was taken up by a very large (and bare) chalkboard. Finally, more centralized, was a desk with a chair sat behind it, and two arm chairs sat in front of that for clients.

It was nice, and clean, but one of the oddities was the fact that most of the surfaces were covered in papers or books. Even the shelves seemed to lack traditional organization. One could definitely expect that his dorm mates were glad that most of his clutter had migrated from there to here. The other oddity was definitely the fact that there wasn’t any useful technology to speak of, though perhaps that was less odd when one considered the owner of the office was from 1905.

... That only went so far though, considering that Murdoch would have probably gone to the other extreme if he had arrived instead of Watts.

It doesn’t take omg for the man in question to look up from where he was working, absently distracted by... something. Probably trying to read his own notes. “Oh! Enis, it’s that time already?” He smiled lightly, putting everything aside to show her in properly. “I um... lost track I suppose.”

He glanced around the office sheepishly, “Yes uh— I suppose it is... I meant to clean up before you got here but...” A small shrug, perhaps next time...”I do know though? Mostly... The general area.” He gestured at a pile next to him, perhaps not as confident as he tried to sound.

Llewellyn did know what he was doing though, and he was honest when he said he knew where something was in general. It just took him a while to find it sometimes... His attention span tended to flit and jump about to scattered musings in ways the other detective didn’t quite get, and occasionally annoyed, but it was just his process.

Of course, it did help the odd time he was slightly more organized. He’d had a partner once who took it upon himself to do so... But then he’d died and Llewellyn slowly returned to the chaotic mess that Enis saw now. “Oh, I’m going through my past notes, to make sure I haven’t forgotten anything important of late.” He’s... working up to getting his memory issues looked at. Until then, he relied on occasionally going over his notes to make sure he hasn’t missed anything.

Which was a bit sad, considering he’d forgotten the time and that she was visiting.

It was absolutely a several day process, especially if he were in charge of tidying up. He relaxed some when she said she didn’t care about the mess, Llewellyn had at least gotten enough of a feel for Enis at this point to know that similar to himself, she said what she meant more often than not. So he nodded, a little grin on his face as he shuffled through a few more papers.

“It’s very cozy, the uh— sofa is actually not bad for a nap if I work overnight.” He responds absentmindedly, humming a little as he ran a finger down a page. He had been developing the bad habit of late, especially since getting his dog. He didn’t like the pup to be underfoot around the dorm, so he tended to bring Pretzel with him unless someone offered to look after him.

As such, the dog was padding around the floor under the chair Enis was sitting in curiously. This was a new person, and new people were to be investigated.

“I’m actually trying to decide on what to start next? The mm... there are a few requests, though not all of them seem like real cases so much as one person looking for gossip on another.” He says with a small frown, he wasn’t fond of people who didn’t just communicate openly with one another. It made very little sense to him, especially the idea of drama and arguments that could come of it.

“Yes... I don’t dislike the dorms but uh— they’re pretty noisy sometimes, and people are quite particular with how it’s kept.” So this was a much better arrangement for someone prone to being disorganized and all over the place.

“Oh— Yes, he’s um... fairly recent. Just sort of appeared one day.” Pretzel took to her quite well, tail wiggling rapidly when she scratched behind his ear. He was a good little wrinkly dog, if a little prone to chewing things he shouldn’t. Llewellyn had yet to perfect training that out of the dog, so shoes either stayed on your feet or were put higher than the short animal could reach.

“He’s good company though. His name’s Pretzel, he usually responds to it now.” Listen, he’s never had to name something before and he’s still a little awkwardly embarrassed by some of the reactions to the name.

The detective raised a brow at that for a moment, before he pulled half his current little pile of papers out from other the top ones and offered it up to his friend. “Most of them have been so far, I confess that crime here has been very minimal. Not that it’s a bad thing, of course, probably for the best... But! I still haven’t gotten through them all yet. Maybe if something mm... grabs you, we can have a look at that?”

Llewellyn was enjoying the experience of having a pet and teaching them, but he certainly wouldn’t turn down the opportunity to learn to work on some things he couldn’t quite figure out yet. “Could you? I certainly could use some assistance with um... teaching him not to chew on things. He’s been very stubborn about that.” He glanced down at the dog who seemed content to have settled at Enis’ feet for now, in case further pats would be granted later.

“I also intend to teach him to track, apparently they love that. Like an uh— game for them. So if you like, I might request your assistance in getting him to follow a trail to find someone.” He explained with a little smile, it might not be particularly useful here... but you never knew. If not, it seemed like the sort of thing that would help to entertain the pup and wear out some of his energy.

Oh, now a theft Llewellyn certainly could get behind. Well... depending on the theft. He’d been young and poor once, he knew what it was like to need to do what you could to get by. A break in though suggested it was a different sort of theft, so he leaned forward to squint a bit at the paper Enis was holding. “Thefts can sometimes be more complicated than they seem, that sounds like a good one to go with next.”

The detective couldn’t help the small grin though at Enis’ idea and the way she presented them. “You’re thinking like a detective, Enis. I think you’ll be very helpful.” He hadn’t even expected her to bring up fingerprints, or as they called them where he was from, finger marks. It was still a fairly new practice, one that Detective Murdoch could go on about at length. Of course, Enis was from the future... It was likely that the practice had caught on. “Mm... We’ll have to go to the scene and see what we can find. Hopefully they haven’t tampered with anything too much, It’s uh— hard to say if they’ve touched or messed with too much.”

“I could probably look around the market to see if they have anything specifically for dogs to chew?” He responded curiously, not really sure how else to go about it. “Positive reinforcement with treats as been very successful with everything else, I suppose it’s um— hard for him to help himself when it comes to chewing though.”

It didn’t help that the dog was so small, and so awkward looking with the wrinkles and the extremely long ears. Llewellyn is a softy.

He opened his mouth to comment on the investigation methods, before he got hung up on the word ‘scanner’ like he didn’t quite understand what the word meant. “Wait— you want you have a device that can just... scan a crime scene? That’s possible? I mean! Of course, it’s possible, you wouldn’t have said it if it weren’t but...”

He huffs a little, thoughtful as he mumbled, “Murdoch would love that...” He shook his head a little before he continued. “I presume that the future means a lot of advancements for methods of investigation...?”

Llewellyn was still very curious about the fact that the sphere didn’t appear to have livestock to speak of, so visiting the butcher and wondering on where the sphere’s meat came from was definitely something that had been on his mind once or twice. He had already nearly ruined a few meals for himself in his own world by being curious (almost went vegetarian, if it weren’t for someone mocking him), and eventually had decided it was probably better that he didn’t think on the subject too hard while here. “I will ask next time I’m at the market and let you know from there? He does seem uh... calmer after he’s been allowed to chew something. I don’t like to take things from him, but he’s not particularly discerning when it comes to what he chooses.”

The detective adapted well enough to the futuristic changes around him, he was used to having everything he knew being upheaved by some form of chaos or other, and so he tried his best to catch up on more modern advancements that were common upon arrival. So it wasn’t strange that people forgot that he was from the 1900s, especially considering some of the strange things that shouldn’t exist during that era in his own world. Admittedly, he was only just realizing that it extended to how he did his job as well though. “That sounds very useful... Do you have anything I can um— read or look over to try to learn how that all works? Seems that there are still a few things I need to catch up on.” Not that he properly understands some stuff, science and invention isn’t really his forte. Murdoch was the science and forensics guy, he was the more about the mind and for lack of a better term ‘heart’ of the perpetrator.

He looked up with raised rows at the idea that Murdoch was his partner though, a small smile on his face as he shook his head. “Mm... We work together sometimes, usually just to lend a hand on a case that’s too big for one person. I owe him a lot, I was uh... let go because of disagreements where I worked first and he allowed me to work out of his station. I’m more of a spare part around the station to be honest, usually there’s only one detective per station house.”

More him helping Murdoch than the other way around, Llewellyn had a hard time asking for assistance. George was his friend, but more often Murdoch’s actual partner, “I did have someone close to a partner once... Constable Jackson. A stout, earnest fellow. Sharp of wit and mind.” He mumbled with a little shrug, there’s a small amount of hurt in the back of his expression, Jackson was unfortunately dead.

“That would be very helpful, Enis. Otherwise, you um... might get tired of my questions.” He responded with a little smile. Llewellyn definitely wanted to avoid that, he liked having his friends company and the idea of having someone to work with that was both agreeable and tended to understand what he was trying to get at was definitely a pleasant one.

The detective was a little surprised when she tapped his shoulder lightly, before a familiar little smile slipped into place. He definitely appreciated the gesture, it was almost an oddly approving one he occasionally had been granted back home. “Thank you? I look forward to working with you— when you have time, of course. You’re already more agreeable than some people I’ve worked with.” He paused for a moment, before adding, “Maybe we’ll even solve one of the first real cases I’ve seen come through together?”

Sometimes, they were very alike. Llewellyn had certainly been prone to being a touch more difficult when it came to certain people around him. Then again, it was also more of a defence mechanism. One that he’d been learning to curb a bit in recent years. “Well that’s very kind of you, though you don’t know how many questions I’m prone to asking yet.” He added with a little grin, before checking the address on the request.

“I think that does sound good. I think your shop is uh— a little closer than the crime scene anyway.” He responded with a smile, folding the paper up and tucking it in a pocket before he went searching for his hat. It was currently sitting on top of a lamp, before he snagged and popped it on his head.

He does take a moment to get Pretzel settled, making sure there was fresh water near the smallish pillow he’d been using for a bed for now. Normally he’d bring the dog with him, but this actually seemed like it might be a proper case compared to the other things he’d been called on for.

Putting a sign up at the door, he turned to Enis with a nod, “We should be set to go. I’ll mm... let you lead where we’re going to the shop first.”

“I trust that you will.” And he does, most people aren’t afraid to tell him off to begin with, though with Enis he’s more comfortable with it just being out of respect for the fact that he’d understand and not... because of a general dislike for him.

Llewellyn followed Enis to the shop after that, leaning against the side of the building with his shoulder as though he were holding it up for most of the duration of her disappearance inside. He was in detective brain mode, thinking about the few scant details of the case and looking forward to getting to the crime scene. The detective didn’t like that there were crimes to investigate, but he did like to feel useful. It was important for him to have thing to do, matters to turn his mind over on in place of thinking about things he’d rather not.

When she returned, he pulled away from the building with a nod. “Wow, you uh— have a lot of things.” He commented as they started walking again, brows raised curiously as he looked at the bag. Llewellyn couldn’t guess what was in the bag, but he couldn’t help but wonder over it. There was just so much that he didn’t know now, so much to catch up on and learn that he hadn’t even considered before.

Llewellyn would have been flattered that she was willing to put her other projects on the back burner for him, although anyone who knew him might suggest she not put the armour aside. He was a bit prone to getting in trouble after all. Not that he’d admit to needing protection. “Ah— that might be very useful in a situation where there was evidence of a struggle, to work out when it might have happened?”

He leads on as suggested, moving away from the shop and down the road towards some of the other inhabited domes used by the older residents. Those who had been here before the rest, as he thought of them. Mapping out the room would be helpful? Murdoch usually builds these mm... crime scene models in his office if there’s more than one room involved. It’s good to be able to reference when not at the scene? So, that might be quite helpful.”

He gives her a slightly clumsy grin back, the sort that suggested he couldn’t deny that she might have to fix something... “Well that’s uh— probably good. Though I have yet to break any of Murdoch’s inventions, if that helps.” This was only because Murdoch always caught him messing about with stuff and would tell him to stop. Oh well... At least his new friend seemed fine with him playing around with things and trying them out.

“Hmmm...” Llewellyn was thinking about the idea that anything else might be helpful. He wasn’t entirely sure how much was possible as far as technology was concerned, but he was eager to find out. Of course, there was one thing he was rather fond of that he had yet to seek out himself. It... seemed a little simple compared to her other inventions, but the detective would probably value help with this particular issue quite a bit. “I’ve seen these mm... things people use to record their voices? Alex has something like that. I uh— I take a lot of notes, and I was thinking it might be helpful?”

He scuffs a food, glancing ahead thoughtfully as they moved from one area to another, “I have uh— issues sometimes with remembering things—” An understatement, but he wasn’t about to try to explain that until it became pertinent or someone called him out on it. “And as you might have noticed... I tend to be disorganized.”
