WHAT: Richard is trying to teach Alex to do some simple cooking. I'm sure it will go well.

Strictly speaking, Alex Reagan can't even bake. The cookies that she makes around holidays and such are technically no bake ones, and whenever she tries to make any other kind they end up a disaster of the first order: burnt or raw, salt instead of sugar once at Nic's house, definitely without enough flour one time she picked up powder sugar for almond meal when she was trying to be gluten free. Of course, her attempts at actually cooking were something that were somehow even more laughable.

The biggest lie that Alex Reagan told on her show (other than that whole bit at the end, of course) was that with Hello Fresh she had managed to whip up gourmet meals. What she'd actually whipped up instead was gourmet ashes and a broken smoke detector. Which was fine! Living in a city had advantages, and the fact that you could get anything delivered to you was one of them. And there was also things like drive thrus, ez mac and frozen chicken nuggets.

But now she was trying to learn to look something that Richard said was easy, but then again it's Richard who had once been asked to be on Podcast Chopped, and Alex wasn't even allowed an EZBake oven as a kid. And now here she was trying to cook eggs. With a voice that had a bit of dubiousness in it, Alex can't help but to ask: "am I doing this right?"

"Self-awareness." He sounds both entertained and curious. "You're evolving."

[11calls]

"Shut up." Alex says the words with a little laugh, and she just steps closer to him. "I mean, I throw something in the microwave and it never takes more than five seconds, and I can do other things while I'm doing it. Rather than standing here and waiting for butter to melt."

"There's merit in taking things slow." It's a fact. Things taste better when they're not heated in the microwave.

"Immovable object," Alex just says with a little smirk and gestures towards him. "Unstoppable force. I'm bad at slow, you know."

[nobasisinfact]

"Which is why you can't cook." Simple as that.

[11calls]

"So," Alex just grins up at him, her eyes sparkling. "Are you saying that I'm a hopeless case, Dr. Strand?" The amusement is laced into every word, twining around it with almost a dare implicit in them.

[nobasisinfact]

"We'll see." He smirks back slightly, crossing his arms as he watches. She, after all, said he could do it herself.

Alex definitely didn't mean that she'd figured out the cooking thing. She'd only figured out why she was so damned bad at it. Which was still true, and which might always be true considering just how stubborn and unstoppable Alex Reagan happened to be. Swirling the pan as the butter is finally starting to melt and get foamy, she just looks at him expectantly.

He gestures to the pan. "Be my guest."

[11calls]

"Come on, Richard." Alex just protests quickly, one of her hands on her hip. "You know I did't mean that. I thought you didn't like the sound of the fire alarm?"

[nobasisinfact]

"I'll give commentary." They both know that if she's screwing it up he'll tell her.

[11calls]

Alex just rolls her eyes at that, but in a goodnatured sort of way, and considering he's not telling her what to do, she just dumps the eggs into the pan and tilts it this way and that until she's got what appears to be an even layer of it in the bottom of the pan. That's how omelets are made, right?

Richard winces but doesn't say anything. Alex isn't going to be cooking him eggs any time soon.

[11calls]

Alex notices the wince of course, and she just frowns at him with a tilted head, her confusion evident: "what? Isn't that how omelets are made? You let them get all mostly cooked and then you put the cheese inside and just kind of fold them up?"

"It's fine." They just won't be properly fluffy.

[11calls]

Alex just gives him signature Richard look, and then turns back to look at the pan, poking at one of the barely solidified egg edges impatiently.

[nobasisinfact]

Richard picks up his scotch and drinks while he's watching.

[11calls]

Alex just pokes at it some more, and then she pokes at it a bit more before frowning intensely at it. "This is taking a long time to like. Brown."

[nobasisinfact]

"It takes time."

[11calls]

"How much time?" Alex just groans in frustration for a moment before she just reaches over and turns the burner up, because if he's not helping her, and this is taking too damned long she's going to full on go about this in her own way.

[nobasisinfact]

He walks up behind her and turns down the heat a bit. "Patience."

[11calls]

Alex just looks at him over her shoulder with a very long and drawn out sigh. "But how long?" There may be the first hints of a whine in it.

[nobasisinfact]

"Would you like me to finish it?"

[11calls]

"No." Alex just shakes her head quickly. "You already think I fucked it up so I'm going to keep having it be my fuck up, I think."

"I never said you had." He'll keep drinking his scotch though.
