It’s the most wonderful (welcome) time of the year
Christmas is coming earlier and earlier every year, which isn't a surprise but hey they're starting the Christmas/Winter stuff the week before thanksgiving. Because why not. this month’s party takes place in the Merchant dome. But it’s not the everyday appearance of the merchant dome. No, for the next five days the Merchant dome’s appearance has been altered to look like a sort of Bavarian Christmas Market. There are small clusters of tables every so often, so people can just sit and chat and eat and drink.

Some enterprising person has even managed to make it snow through some unknown means. It’s not cold, but the snow is soft and steady and slowly building up.

The entire dome, all of the streets and all of the merchant stalls are practically glowing with white fairy lights that are strung everywhere. Vendors in their stalls gleefully cry out to paterons passing by, offering them free food or drinks. The food consists of the sort of things that one might expect to find in a place like this: sausages on buns and on sticks, pretzels, pizza, loads of cookies of every variety that one could think of, including elaborately decorated gingerbread, chocolates, fruits, french fries. Think winter fair food, and be as absurd and as complicated and extra as you want. It is a fair, after all. Go nuts. Drinks are also along the same line: hot cider, mulled wine, hot buttered rum, hot chocolate both with booze and without, as well as all the normal things: water, coffee, tea, milk, soda, and a variety of fruit juices that you’ve both heard of and not.

But food isn’t the only free thing that people are giving away! They’re also offering characters hats and gloves and scarves, small toys, books, delicate ornaments, perfumes, wine… it’s a giant welcome party after all, and these people are cheerful and happy. Even offering to pay just gets met with laughter and being told not to worry about it.

Fun and frivolity.

There are even carnival rides set up! A medium sized ferris wheel, a carousel, a giant slide and ice skating ring are all along the outside of the stalls.

At the far end of the dome, the snow has fallen deeper and held to several inches. Wouldn’t you know it just happens to be perfect snowball snow! So, there of course needs to be a snowball fight! What did you think those free mittens and gloves and scarves are for after all? The snowball fight can be organized into teams, or one on one depending on the player’s choice. This is a friendly fight, of course, so no rocks or slush balls or anything. Well, probably not. No one in the Sphere is your mother.

So you want some summer?.

While the welcome party rages on in the merchant dome, people have made a smaller party in one of the recreation domes. Around the pools, as a matter of fact. There’s almost like a small barbecue clustered around the largest of the three pools, and the light is constant and sunny here. The large pool is olympic sized, and is a sparkling blue. It’s fresh water, and probably clean enough to drink. I still wouldn’t drink it. The second pool is slightly smaller and more kidney shaped with a gradual sand mound at one end of it. This pool is salt water and looks a bit more like a beach than a pool. The third pool is a kiddie pool, complete with a splash pad, that’s running. Buckets drop, it’s got one of those mushroom things, and sprinkler jets. There aren’t any kids though, so people are welcome to go nuts.

Bathing suits and towels are provided in the changing rooms. There’s frozen and fruity drinks flowing freely, along with finger food and snacks. Loud music is playing from a local band that’s just generally of a pop sort. There’s people dancing rather in a rather haphazard fashion, but the dance floor is there and present!

Oh yeah, and there's definitely the baths and everything too!

"You do, man. You have this giant 'kick me' sign on your forehead."

The fun was what had driven him here for after all.

Speaking of surprises that he enjoyed... He couldn’t help but smile into the kiss, leaning into it lightly. It was a sweet moment. That he had the chance to enjoy it there on the Ferris wheel with his love at all, unworried about the world around them as they enjoyed each other’s company, felt wonderful.

His brow wrinkled a little at that idea, “... I’m quite sure I would know if I had a sign on my forehead. Also, you haven’t exactly kicked me.”

He paused for a moment... “I’m sure you don’t mean that literally though.” Llewellyn added with a little shake of his head.

Kell rolls his eyes a bit at that. He’s happy for Rhy, though, he really is. He glanced over as the other continued, giving it some thought.

“It could have its repercussions too.”

Rey knew. Rey knew just like she had hoped that Ben had known. It was why she had spent so much time trying to save him before the end. Before things had gone so wrong. Still, something bare saying aloud and this is definitely one of those things.

“I love you, Ben Solo. I’ve loved you for such a long time. I can’t imagine not loving you.”

And then Rey just kisses him again.

He hasn't had many encounters with those from Dorne, other than Oberyn's brief time here, but that was enough for him to recognize it. And he recognizes the sigil, of course. Every one of Ned Stark's children had been expected to learn them. Even the bastard. But beyond the fact that they have Westeros in common, and which house she's from, he knows nothing more of her identity.

"It took me quite some time to get used to it all. This place has very little in common with Westeros."

[Inesa inclines her head in a gentle nod.] I plan to remain here a bit longer. I want to finish sketching out some ideas for the holidays and some wedding designs for Seregil and Alec.

We can meet someone in an hour or so, or simply meet back here, on this bench.

[She holds out her hand to his.]

Yes and we can hold hands. Besides, there is something I want to ask you and I think this is the perfect time.

[Her fingers slid gently through his before she leans forward to place a light sweet kiss on his lips, her mouth curving into a warm smile as she pulls away.]

Please?

"Dornish? Is that where you are from?" She smiled happily as she gently inquired about this woman's world. There were similarities between her form of dress and that of the Stark's but it was different enough that Inesa didn't want to assume they were from the same world. There were many worlds out there.

"I would love to hear about it."

Her mouth curves into an amused smirk as she steps up next to him, her hands now placed carefully on his hips. "I won't push too hard." At least not on purpose. The definition of 'two-hard' was likely different between the two of them. At the very least, she was going to try to walk along side of him.

"Ready?" She doesn't wait but begins to push, gently guiding him across the ice. Enis tries to find a steady pace but she also watches the detective, making sure that he's able to regain his balance.

She's walking along side of him easily but if she were to let go, he'd easily speed beyond her reach. So she kept her hands firmly holding onto his hips, keeping him moving at the speed of her steps.

He shares a look with her, his own eyes both thoughtful and soft with an emotion near happiness. She was alive. She was here. And they could be friends again. "If you need coverage, I've got your back," he banters, smiling gently.

She takes the sight of the city in with breathless joy. While he takes the sight of her in with the same. He cannot seem to help himself. Much as he should focus on everything else, anything else...it's just her. Ashara fills his vision, so close next to him that he can't not touch her, there is nowhere to go.

And she touches him more. Gods help him. Carefully, Ned takes her hand and curls his fingers around hers, giving her something else to hold onto other than his leg. Because he is enjoying that a little too much. But it's certainly not a rejection, not with how his hand wraps big and warm around hers.

"There are many wondrous things here." And chief among them you, says his gaze. "I am glad you got to see this one." Ned tips his head thoughtfully. "Do you need any help adjusting to this new world? I have not been here long myself, but I have learned what I could. With a little help."

“I know you do,” Ashara retorts, teasing and truthful. It’s Ned. Despite what he had done, how he had broken her heart... she still has faith in him. Trusts him. She just shouldn’t trust him with her heart. Although the time for that has long since passed, she thinks.

She hadn’t even realised she was holding onto his leg until he draws her attention to it, until he takes her hand in his. And she thinks that he’s going to simply remove it, settle it back onto her lap... only he doesn’t do anything of the sort. He doesn’t let go of it, of her, wrapping his hand around hers instead.

Oh.

There’s... something in his gaze, something that she must surely be mistaken on. But it makes her heart skip a beat all the same. Gods help me. “I would like that,” she tells him. “Very much. I do think I need a little help. It’s all so...” Wordlessly, she indicates everything around them. “Much.” Oh, this is probably a mistake, her heart cannot take it... but she cannot do anything else. It’s Ned. And to avoid him would be... more pain than she can imagine. Even more than losing him was.

For once, Ned was figuratively letting his hair down. He raised a brow back. They had the same brow. That was one feature Robb had gotten from him. Catelyn had often stroked it when he was a baby, seeming to cherish the traces of Ned she saw there.

"Indeed." He all but smirked back at Robb. "It is a simple enough process I believe. You simply gather it all with a fist and - "

The sudden lob comes out of nowhere, as Ned pulls his arm back and pitches it at him. It's not cold, of course, but it's solid, and it's point-blank. And it's not dignified in the slightest.

Ned squeezes her hand. "I thought so too," he reassures her. "I think it is harder for us, when our world is so different than this one. But you will grow used to it. It is already a little less strange to me."

He has to make up for lost time. And for the past long gone, but so near to Ashara's memory. How he'd deserted her, because a higher duty called. It had not made the hurt any less for either of them. But perhaps they could heal here, and discover things about each other they hadn't had time to, when they were too busy...

Ned flushes and glances away, and fortunately the Ferris wheel begins to turn again, letting them reel through the air at an increasing speed. He's still got one arm around her shoulders, the other reaching across his lap (whew) to hold her hand. It is a romantic pose, perhaps, but he tries to keep his feelings in check. For however he feels that he is widowed here - widowed and a dead man walking - he cannot bring himself to play with Ashara's heart again. She has had it broken by him once. Never again. He promises himself that. Never again.

Turning back to Ashara, he keeps his elbow propped up on the back of the seat and touches that hand to the button of his neck. A good way to find out how much she knew about the messaging here.

What do you think of the Ferris wheel? Would you ride it again sometime?

Indeed, he knew the tales of the Faceless Men, although he had never seen their craft in person. Learning that his daughter was among them would be a shock, but nothing he couldn't handle. Sooner or later.

But Ned simply nods and squeezes her shoulders. "We shall have more days. I would like to see you here, as much as I can." His eyes are shadowed now, looking at Arya, knowing he will never see her again in his old life. Yet he cannot live in that sorrow; the joy of the present, having her here with him, is too great.

"Aye," he says, nodding. "You told me that wasn't you." The life he'd painted for her - marrying a great lord, bearing princes and knights, the life Catelyn and he had envisioned when they'd had their daughters - was one even a young Arya had rejected for herself. Now more than ever, it was clear to Ned that she knew what she wanted and had chosen well. "I think there are more swords than lords on your horizon, hm?" And Ned Stark is surprisingly content with that, now.

“I do hope so.” And Ashara does. She wants nothing more than to settle in and find everything less strange. She doesn’t know how long she’s going to be here. It might not be home, but it’s home for now. It would be good to be comfortable.

Having Ned here with her... helps. More than it should, quite possibly, but it helps all the same. A little something familiar, in a vast ocean of the unfamiliar. And oh, is it familiar, sitting here curled up with him so... romantically. Gods, she does need to get a handle on her feelings. He is married, and long moved on from her. Happily so.

But she is glad for the chance to see him again. To spend time with him. Even if it hurts. She’ll heal, someday. She has to. She thinks. She hopes.

She startles, a little, at the sudden text she receives, looking at him questioningly. But she echoes his action, although hers is hesitant and a touch unfamiliar with the whole gesture. Her response, too, takes a moment, and her brow is furrowed just a little in concentration. She is still very new to this.

I think it’s wonderful. And I would absolutely ride it again.

[personal profile] ulfur 2020-12-08 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
It is strange, he knows. Stranger even than, say, sitting here and sending ravens to each other, because it's all in their heads, all at the push of a button. But he's glad to see her getting used to it all. And the furrow between her delicate dark brows is kissable adorable.

Ned presses her hand again. And tries out the next type.

Then, Ashara Dayne, I would like you to ride the Ferris wheel with me tomorrow. And there, she will hear Ned's voice beside her, and then a moment later when the message arrives in her network mailbox, echoing in her ears as she plays it. It will stay there until she deletes it, his voice playfully inviting her to join him on - no, it wasn't what his children called a date, it was just friends meeting and spending time together.

"But today, we should get something to eat after this ride ends," he suggests, fingers slipping between hers. "Do you have any favorites yet? Or wish to try something new?"
qelos: (⚔️ candlelight)

[personal profile] qelos 2020-12-08 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
It is terribly strange. Yet... incredibly useful and so very quick. It will take yet more getting used to. But the best way to get used to something such as this is to use it. So she is. Does. Thanks to Ned.

Oh.

That’s... She smiles up at him as she hears him, twice over, and responds in kind. I would love to ride the Ferris wheel with you, tomorrow. And it’s his turn to hear her voice beside him, and echoed as the message reaches his inbox. He’s inviting her to do this again. And she very much likes the thought of that. As friends.

His fingers slip between hers and she instinctively fits their hands together, fingers intertwined. “Something new, I think.” There are a few things that she quite likes, but here, with him... something new seems fitting. This is a new beginning for them, after all. Their friendship.

He smiles. It is strange and good to hear her voice again. Now he will have it whenever he wishes to replay it. Even if she is gone tomorrow.

"Whatever you wish, Ashara," Ned replies, low and thoughtful. And he is quiet for the remainder of the ride, as he takes in the feeling of her at his side, arm curled around her, hand clasping hers, while they whirl through the air. It is like something out of a dream. And yet, when the wheel slows and their gondola comes to a stop at the platform, she is still there, and he with her, and his hand still holds hers when they dismount.

It is too much to keep holding as they walk, he thinks. That gentlemanly arm returns for her to hold instead. He gestures around them. "Since I don't know what you have and haven't tried, you shall have to pick something. They are not even charging us anything for it. I think they want us to feel at home here." Or else were making them comfortable, complacent. Ned doesn't voice the suspicious thought now, simply takes in all the food vendors in a sweeping glance. "I will try whatever you do."

The rest of their Ferris wheel ride is a quiet one, but Ashara is... content. Content to sit there with Ned’s arm around her and their hands clasped together. It is... wonderful. Almost a dream. Only it is very, very real, and she feels the loss of his hand even as she once more slips her arm through his.

She thinks for a moment, contemplating the choices around them. “There’s a great deal of food on sticks,” she observes in amusement. “What about that?” She points at a food stand proclaiming to have something called... “Corndogs?” She cannot even begin to figure out that particular food item is.

Yes, I imagine you must have much to do for both?

[He responded with a small smile. Never having been to one, Llewellyn wasn’t too familiar with weddings, but they definitely seemed like a busy event. Then when you factored in the holidays that most people were eager to celebrate, Inesa would undoubtedly be kept quite busy.

So pulling out his pocket watch to double check the time, he nodded.
]

I’ll meet you back here in an hour then. If you need me sooner or if we need to meet elsewhere, you uh— know how to get a hold of me.

It was definitely different between the two of them, but Llewellyn was pleased to find she didn’t just give him a shove across the ice. Especially as he didn’t even quite get a response out beef she started pushing him. “O-oh okay, yes. This is... fine? I think... Not too fast, though faster than I think I could manage on my own.” He responded, eyes darting down to his feet as they moved as though it would keep him from toppling over.

This was not helpful, of course, if anything watching his feet would hinder his progress. “This isn’t so bad... Since I’m not falling down, I mean.” He added with a quick glance to Enis as she walked along next to him. “I’m not sure if I can call it progress or not, considering you’re um... keeping me steady.”

"Yes," Ned says with a chuckle, glancing where Ashara does. "They seem obsessed with the notion of food on sticks. It is true, that was popular in Winter Town as well for occasions like Harvest Feast, but never quite such variety or strange assortments as here." Or such colorful advertisements.

He studies the one she points at. "I have not had this one either, but I would venture to guess that the bread is made out of cornmeal. As for the dog part...I have recently learned that the meat here is in fact derived from plants. So even if they consider this a kind of dog, it is only imitation meat." Which reassures Ned that he will not be eating any poor canine. There is no way he could eat an animal so close to a wolf.

He grins at Ashara. "Let's give it a taste." And before long, they are setting off once more each with a so-called corndog held by the stick. "It is not the strangest thing I've ever eaten." And Ned goes to take a bite.

Talking about repercussions, he hopes his brother hasn't been made too uncomfortable by the frequent flutters of hope and excitement and fondness in his brother's heart over the last few months. Good thing it hadn't gotten to true intimacy yet. Rhy was worried about that.

"Yes, it could. However we must look forward, must we not?"
