Even for as much as she knew him (or perhaps because of it), the bear-hug catches her off guard. She actually cried out from surprise as much as joy at the hug-even if it did nearly knock the wind from her.

She also had to catch her breath a little when he let her go. "What about Winter? Is she safe?"

If his daughter could be left with Ivar's mother, she might have a chance. The child was healthy aside from her pale skin, and his mother was a volva besides-she'd know better than anyone to take care of a grandchild who was 'touched by the gods'. On the other hand, any other adult might think her cursed, and her fate would've been even more uncertain.
